India approves $2.3bn for green hydrogen development

The Indian government has approved $2.3 billion to support production, use and exports of green hydrogen, aiming to make India a global hub for the industry.

The approval of the funding represents a step toward establishing the capacity to make at least 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen by 2030.

The aim of the funding initiative is “to make green hydrogen affordable and bring down its cost over the next five years. It will also help India reduce its emissions and become a major exporter in the field,” said Anurag Thakur, India’s minister for information and broadcasting.

According to a press release, the program will facilitate demand creation, production, utilization and export of green hydrogen. It will use two distinct financial incentive mechanisms – targeting domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and production of green hydrogen. The program will also support pilot projects in emerging end-use sectors and production pathways.  egions capable of supporting large scale production and/or utilization of hydrogen will be identified and developed as green hydrogen hubs.
